NATIONAL SECURITY

The narrow Taiwan Strait separates Taiwan’s democratic government from the Chinese Communist Party. Although Beijing claims that Taiwan is an inseparable part of its territory and frequently crosses the median line or stages military exercises encircling the island, the reality is that it has never governed Taiwan. 

The vast differences in territory, population, economic scale, and defense budget between Taiwan and China create formidable challenges for Taiwan’s security. However, Taiwan retains unique strengths and is working to build a more resilient defense and society.
